Shelter Proposals in the Pearl: What You Need to Know
Dear Pearl District Neighbors,
NWCC is aware of two proposed shelters coming to our area with one run by Blanchet House on Northwest 17th and Lovejoy, with a proposed 75 bed women only overnight shelter.
The second proposed shelter would be on the corner of Northwest 15th and Northrup which is spearheaded by the city with 200 co-ed overnight beds. Both operations are overnight which means that they will only be open from 8 pm to 6 am (generally speaking).
With over 275 people potentially being put out onto the street every morning, NWCC is working hard to mitigate the potential issues.
I’ve met with Skyler Brocker-Knapp and Anne Hill from the Mayor’s Portland Solutions to share firsthand insight from our Humanitarian Team’s work on the ground. Our goal is to ensure that if these shelters move forward, mitigation strategies are in place from day one.
We are working closely with them, as well as PDNA and NWDA, to try to prevent potential issues by showing them and talking to them about what happened with the Winter Shelter run by the county in February and connected them directly with our Humanitarian Team to talk about issues on our streets.
NWCC’s approach is to work with the city and nieghborhood groups to make sure they have plans in place with the appropiate safeguards for the community, to resolve issues as soon as possible and to be part of the solution should the shelter open.
At NWCC, we understand your concerns and are taking proactive steps to represent our community.
If you'd like to share feedback or ask questions, you can also contact your district representatives or the Mayor directly—this initiative is part of the Mayor’s office plan to expand overnight shelter capacity citywide.
If you have any questions, you are welcome to reach out to me chase@nwccpdx.org, and I can help answer or direct you to the appropriate contact to make sure your voice is heard.
Thanks,
Chase
