Joining Forces for Public Safety

A Community Roundtable Hosted by NWCC

"When we come together—officers, advocates, and neighbors—we create space for real solutions."
— NWCC

This month, NWCC’s executive director, Chase McPherson, and board chair, Ken Thrasher, had the privilege of hosting a roundtable discussion with representatives from the Portland Police Bureau and Multnomah County law enforcement to explore the ongoing public safety challenges facing our neighborhoods.

Organized by community advocate Corinne Frechette, the meeting brought together a small but dedicated group, including officers from the PPB Crisis Response Team, the Human Trafficking Unit, PPB Sergeant, and PPA President Aaron Schmautz. Community members from Old Town, the Stadium District, and the Pearl also joined the conversation, each bringing deep insight and commitment to improving livability and safety.

The dialogue offered a valuable opportunity to better understand the critical work that law enforcement teams do, as well as the multifaceted challenges they face. While there is no single solution to the issues at hand, the discussion highlighted the potential for reactivating past programs—such as those that once provided detox services, job training, and stability to individuals housed in the Multnomah County Jail. Though not a universal remedy, these efforts have served as a powerful catalyst for change in many lives.

NWCC extends sincere thanks to all participants and a special note of appreciation to Corinne Frechette for facilitating a productive and hopeful conversation.
