How the City of Portland Camera Registry Helped Resolve a Recent Pearl District Incident

NWCC, City of Portland, Cameras, Camera Registry Program

A recent incident in the Pearl District outside of Safeway was helped significantly by the City of Portland Camera Registry, demonstrating how local businesses and residents can play an important role in supporting public safety.

The Camera Registry Program, managed by the City of Portland’s Public Environment Management Office (PEMO), allows businesses and residents to voluntarily register the location of their security cameras. When an incident occurs nearby, investigators may reach out to the registered contact to ask if they are willing to share relevant footage that could assist in an investigation.

Participation in the program is completely voluntary, and registering your camera does not give the City or Portland Police access to your camera system.

How the Camera Registry Works

  • You register the location and contact information for your security cameras.

  • If criminal activity occurs near your property, investigators may contact you to ask if you are willing to review or share footage.

  • Police do not have direct access to your cameras, system, or data.

  • Sharing footage is optional, and you can decline any request.

  • You can remove your camera from the registry at any time.

This program simply helps law enforcement know who to contact if video footage may help solve a crime.

Why It Matters

Security cameras can provide valuable information during investigations, such as timelines, suspect descriptions, or vehicle information. When multiple cameras in an area are registered, it can significantly improve investigators’ ability to understand what occurred and respond effectively.

The recent situation outside Safeway in the Pearl District highlights how community participation and technology can work together to support neighborhood safety.

Register Your Camera

NWCC encourages businesses and residents who have security cameras to consider joining the program.
