Stories from the Streets: What Effective Humanitarian Outreach Looks Like
The man lying across from NWCC member, Fields Bar and Grill, wasn't looking for help. He denied help from both Pearl Patrol and Street Response. Brendan from our NWCC Humanitarian Outreach Team arrived, assessed the situation, and then sat down beside the distressed man.
The man’s name was Kyle, and he was ill, agitated, and unwilling to engage. Brendan sat with him, calmly engaging for over an hour, not pushing or pressuring, just being present. Sometimes that's the only thing that breaks through.
When Systems Aren't Designed to Help Everyone
After much back and forth with Brendan, Kyle agreed to stay at CityTeam’s Men’s Residential Recovery program, a local NWCC resource that includes an overnight shelter in Old Town, for three nights. It was a concrete win. But then came the obstacle: he refused to go without transportation. He was moving slowly and was unwell. He needed a ride quickly.
Brendan knew that Street Response sometimes transports people to treatment facilities, but outreach-generated transport requests aren’t part of their mandate. So he called Radio Cab, a resource NWCC partners with for exactly these moments when traditional systems have gaps.
What This $20 Cab Ride Really Means
It’s an example of NWCC's street outreach at its best. Our team recognizes that a person on the streets who has accepted shelter and help has just taken a very hard step forward. NWCC make’s sure that the help offered actually gets them somewhere. The commitment, training and good judgement used by our team member resulted in a cab ride, and the difference between Kyle spending another night on the street in the Pearl and three nights warm, fed, and safe at CityTeam.
This is the year round, day-to-day work of NWCC's Humanitarian Outreach Team. It's challenging, and we're very fortunate to have committed professionals like Terrance, Brendan, and Tiffany showing up to connect our most vulnerable neighbors with care and respect.
