NWCC Launches Window Art Program to Support Pearl District Businesses
Have you spotted colorful murals replacing boarded-up windows?
The Northwest Community Coalition (NWCC) is piloting a new initiative to support the Pearl District by turning boarded-up windows into vibrant works of art. Leading the creative charge is Juan Leon, a talented local artist from Fresh is Cool!, whose murals transform plain boards into eye-catching, conversation-starting pieces that celebrate the creativity and resilience of our community.
One of Juan’s latest projects brings color and joy to Miss OZ, the beloved ice cream shop owned by Millie Keum, who continues to make visitors of all ages smile in the heart of the Pearl. His artistry also brightens the entrance of Fancy Baby, adding charm and positivity where boarded windows once stood.
This inspiring program began with Larry Johnson, NWCC advisor, who shared the idea as a way to help small businesses during tough times, such as increased graffiti and break-ins.
While still in its early stages, the project’s mission is clear: to show small businesses in the Pearl District that they are supported and valued—no matter the challenges.
If you’re a business owner interested in having an artist transform your boarded-up windows, or if you’d like to help grow this program, we’d love to hear from you. Together, we can turn setbacks into community art and keep the Pearl District a welcoming, vibrant place for all.
Juan was recently featured in the Pearl District Portfolio for his work during September’s First Thursday Art Walk, where he showcased his distinctive style and community-focused creativity. You can read more about his artistic journey and past projects in this article.
